Justice Anthony M. Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court on June 27, 2018, effective July 31, 2018.
Kennedy was born in Sacramento, CA, on July 23, 1936. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford and law degree from Harvard. He began his career in private practice and then taught law at the University of the Pacific. President Gerald Ford appointed him to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1975. President Reagan nominated him to the Supreme Court, and he took his seat on February 18, 1988.
