What Are They Hiding? List of Justices' Events That Should've Been Video-Recorded
Fix the Court has identified over 85 Supreme Court Justice events from 2024 and 2025 that should’ve been video- or audio-recorded, but weren’t – and our follow-ups made little headway. Why weren’t these events recorded?
Fix the Court has been maintaining a comprehensive, continuously updated list of SCOTUS Justice events in 2024 and 2025. In doing so, we noticed that many events that should have been accompanied by video or audio recordings simply were not. So, we launched an investigation into exactly how many events went unrecorded.
We do not expect every event to be recorded. For example, if a Justice is holding an in-chambers meeting, attending a photo shoot, or meeting with schoolchildren at the Supreme Court, we would not expect recordings. We also excluded events with a built-in video or audio component, such as television appearances, podcasts, and radio interviews.
After a comprehensive review, we determined that of the 222 SCOTUS Justice events in 2024 and the 140 events in 2025 (as of our check on August 30), 86 events—about a quarter—were expected to have recordings but did not. That’s a lot of missing material.
We reached out to the venues for these events with missing recordings to see if we could track them down. The results were disappointing, but not surprising.
Below is our list of 2024 and 2025 SCOTUS Justice events that should have been recorded but were not, along with the results of our follow-up inquiries.
For about half of all inquiries, we have not yet received a response. If no response has been received, we do not include a note by the event. If we did receive a response, we include a note in bold italics.
Of the 16 responses we received, only one fulfilled our request and provided video. The more common replies were: “we do not have a recording,” “we were not allowed to record,” or some form of paywall (e.g., membership required to view the video).

Some Concluding Notes
This investigation is comprehensive and ongoing, and the list will change and grow over time. We are continuing to follow up with venues in hopes of obtaining these vital recordings in the interest of judicial transparency.
Ultimately, there should be far more audio and video recordings of public events. Justices’ remarks are valuable and clearly in the public interest – as demonstrated by Fix the Court’s recent unearthing of a Justice Sotomayor recording from summer 2024 in which she revealed that she had a unique perspective on the court’s operations and future. These remarks deserve to be accessible, and we are working to make that happen.
We will continue to update this story as it develops.
