Everyone reading this post likely knows that the Supreme Court records the audio of its opinion announcements, but unlike oral arguments, it doesn’t livestream them. This is in spite of a valiant yearslong campaign by the SCOTUS press corps to change the policy.

Instead, the Court holds on to these audio files until the start of the following term when it sends them to the National Archives. The Archives places them in its catalog, at which point Oyez, a project of Cornell’s Legal Information Institute, Justia and Chicago-Kent College of Law, obtains them and posts them online in an easy-to-enjoy format.

At least that’s how it typically goes. But this past year, something fell through, and instead of having audio files of OT24 opinion announcements on Archives.gov or Oyez.org in October, it was suddenly January, and no one could seem to locate them.

Enter Fix the Court. We’re pleased to announce that today marks the first public release of this audio, which FTC law clerk Emma Donahue obtained from the Archives yesterday after much back and forth with the staff there plus a visit to the agency’s D.C. headquarters.

This marks another big win for our small organization, yet it’s incomplete given the dilatory way the audio reaches the public.

We’ve posted the MP3 files below as we received them, and in the near future, we’ll download, edit and re-release them for ease of use — though to be honest, we hope Oyez beats us to it for this part of the project.

In OT24, SCOTUS issued 67 opinions, according to its own accounting. The audio files comprise 56 authored opinions, all summarized from the bench, with two dissents summarized; eight per curiam opinions, with only one noted from the bench; and three DIGs, all noted from the bench.
