As a SCOTUS Justice, Sotomayor No Longer Bound by Code of Conduct
Justice Sonia Sotomayor was a judge on the New York-based Second Circuit for more than a decade before being nominated to the Supreme Court in 2009.
When she and seven of her eight colleagues were serving as federal judges, they were all bound to the Code of Conduct for U.S. Judges. But no longer. The justices are the only federal judges exempt from following the code.
Shouldn’t the highest legal officials in the land be held to the highest ethical standards?
Fix the Court is calling on Chief Justice Roberts and his colleagues to formally adopt the code of ethics – called the Code of Conduct for United States Judges – that all other federal judges are required to follow. Should they demur, we believe Congress has the authority to compel the justices to adopt the code.
